Only a few people know it, but the name of Pikachu comes from Pika, a small rodent very similar to a rabbit but with round ears. If you consult google images on Pikas, not only you will see how cute they are, but you will find many pictures of these little animals with their mouths full of branches and leaves they gather for the winter.

The reason we talk about the Pikas here is that these little animals are endangered. The Pikas live in the alpine mountains, in cold and wet habitats, so they are very sensitive to temperature changes. A population study of Pikas of America has shown that its population has been declining due to changes in temperature affecting the snow cover, the abundance of vegetation and moisture.

Because of this increment in the temperature, Pikas have been moving higher and higher in the mountains to compensate this increase of the heat. This phenomenon  was already studied in several species of plants that year by year moved their habitats slowly up the mountains, searching for the optimum temperature for the species, until the day that they reached the top, when they disappeared.

For me, this is a new way that humans have to kill a species. It is a way to, literaly, "drown" one or more species. Soon, all that we know of Pikas is that we have ended up replacing them by Pikachus.



Sabías que Pikachu existe?

Poca gente lo sabe, pero el nombre de Pikachu viene de Pika, un roedor parecido al conejo pero con orejas redondas. Si consultáis imágenes en google sobre los pikas, no sólo veréis lo monos que son, sino que encontraréis muchas imágenes de estos animalillos con las bocas llenas de ramas y hojas que recolectan para el invierno.

La razón de que hable de los Pikas aquí es que estos pequeños animalitos están en peligro de extinción. Los Pikas viven en las montañas, en zonas frías y húmedas, de modo que son muy sensibles a los cambios de temperatura. Un estudio de la población de Pikas de America ha mostrado que su población se ha ido reduciendo debido a los cambios en la temperatura, que afectan a la cobertura de nieve, la abundancia de vegetación y la humedad.

Debido a este incremento de las temperaturas, los Pikas se han estado moviendo más y más alto en las montañas para compensar este incremento del calor. Este fenómeno ya se había observado en varias especies de plantas que año tras año trasladaban su hábitat lentamente hacia la cumbre, en busca de la temperatura óptima para la especie, hasta el día en que llegaron a la cima, finalmente desapareciendo.

Para mí, esta es una nueva forma que tienen los humanos de matar una especie. Se trata de una manera de "ahogar" a una o varias especies y pronto, todo lo que sabremos de los Pikas es que los terminamos sustituyendo por Pikachus.
